The Los Angeles Lakers have struggled this season, that much is sure. What can be done to remedy their struggles remains to be seen. Many seem to think the answer lies in bringing in a strong center to anchor the young core of D’Angelo Russell, Julius Randle, and Jordan Clarkson. A player that can run effective pick-and-roll offense, clean up the boards, and a provide much needed defensive presence. They’ve already expressed some interest in DeMarcus Cousins, but that ship may have sailed. The next likely target? Miami Heat center Hassan Whiteside.
According to ESPN Insider Kevin Pelton:
“With DeMarcus Cousins assuredly out of the picture with the Sacramento Kings fighting for a playoff spot… that could make Whiteside an obvious target in free agency this summer…
Trading players or picks for him would only make sense to prevent the Miami Heat from trading him elsewhere at the deadline.” The Lakers have already made it clear that they’re willing to trade away multiple players, but if the Heat are willing to deal is the ultimate question in whether this trade occurs.
